automotive labels

Automotive labels must be able to withstand extreme conditions to ensure they last for several years and therefore maintain the safety standards of the vehicle.

For an automotive spare parts supplier, the label represents an indispensable element.

A misprinted figure or incorrectly labeled part can lead to costly recalls, dissatisfied customers and, consequently, economic losses.

What characteristics should an automotive label have?

An essential feature for a vehicle is that all its components are well-marked and identified.

A correct label and code are the basis of optimal product management. It is fundamental, however, digitize the labeling process, so as not to make manual errors. Automating the operations to create labels will allow you to better manage the recognition of individual elements. This will make production easier and increase printing efficiency.

Personalize labels based on color, material, size and shape also improves the quality control process.

Another innovation that is highly effective is RFID technology. This involves the insertion of a microchip inside the labels, so that each item can be tracked and monitored, reducing decoding times and acts of falsification. Automotive labels are indispensable for carrying out various essential tasks, ranging from the simple identification of a spare part to actual logistics, up to constituting a safeguard element. The various applications can take place in the engine compartment or in the passenger compartment, and in both cases, they are not only identification tools, but also, and more importantly, alerting. In fact, the label within the automotive sector is also a vehicle of information (warning signs, danger signs, instructions) for mechanics and auto electricians and must be designed with highly durable materials. Thanks to our technology we print high-strength heat-resistant labels, with special plastics on anti-crunching supports. Placed in the engine compartment, where temperatures are extreme and exposure to liquids such as brake fluid, engine oil and window cleaner can deteriorate both the printed information and the self-adhesive material.

Automotive labels: application examples

Durable automotive labels continually undergo grueling stresses.

The labels thus created have characteristics of resistance to temperature changes,to chemical agents, abrasion (especially for the engine compartment) and for the labels to be affixed to the outside, high resistance to atmospheric agents and sunlight.

A classic example of use are labels for cutting plastic-coated cars, but in general we make them for:

  • engine compartment information

  • component information (e.g. batteries, filters, etc.)

  • maintenance information (e.g. writable service labels)

  • information to track the components (e.g. labels with progressive numbering or barcode)

Specifically, use for external use includes examples such as: instructions relating to the fuel cap, tire pressure labels and traceability and service labels placed in various areas of the car. For internal applications, labels such as airbag warning labels, safety labels, anti-counterfeiting labels, warning/instruction/traceability labels designed for electronic components and vehicle interior parts. For the engine compartment, warning/instruction labels are produced that are resistant to the heat and chemical agents present in the engine components; without neglecting that range of printed labels for liquid containers, batteries and cables. Our quality office is able to analyze your current printing program in search of optimizations in materials for an optimal cost/resistance ratio.

Printing of labels for the Automotive Sector: the legislation

Placed in the engine compartment, where temperatures are extreme and exposure to liquids such as brake fluid, engine oil and window cleaner can deteriorate and affect both the printed information and the self-adhesive material. Durable labels for the automotive sector continually undergo exhausting stress.

The different types of automotive labels

Thermal labels

Thermal labels are package seals that have a "special" layer on which the printer can print with heat.

  • What is the UFI code to show on the label?
The unique formula identifier, known by the acronym UFI, is a code that will be mandatory to indicate on the label of products that contain a dangerous mixture (even in minimal quantities).
  • What information should you include on a cosmetic product label?
Company information (name, logo, etc.), Product function, Expiry date of the product after opening the package (with related symbols), Indications for using the product and any precautions List of ingredients, Weight or volume, Name, company name and address of the person responsible, Manufacturing batch number, Country of origin (non-EU countries).
  • Is there any mandatory information to include?
yes, you must include: company info, product quantity, list of ingredients, expiry date. We have written an article that explains all the regulations on cosmetic labeling, if you want to know more click here.
  • What are the ideal materials for printing product labeling by industry?
According to the law, the materials used must guarantee the safety of those who use them. Choosing the most suitable material for printing your labels is essential to obtain the desired result. Depending on the shape of the support, the type of application, the type of product in question, thanks to our experience in the sector we are able to recommend the most suitable materials compared to others. Here are some materials that can be used in the various sectors: White coated paper A bright, glossy alternative to white paper. Ipanema paper resistant to oil and water Waterproof and resistant paper even on the edges. Suitable for liquid products or where storage in humid places is required. Glossy white polypropylene Polypropylene is versatile, economical and resistant, making it possible to create labels for plastic, paper, glass and metal products. Resistant to humidity and suitable for the chemical sector. Transparent polypropylene Versatile and adaptable like white polypropylene. It is often used for printing labels intended for transparent packages and bottles because it makes it possible to see the contents.
  • What materials do you use for your eco-friendly labels?
We use eco-sustainable materials such as recycled paper, paper from sustainable sources, bioplastic, compostable film and other biodegradable materials.
  • How do you produce your labels to reduce your environmental impact?
We use technologies such as digital printing, inkjet printing and flexographic printing to reduce the use of toxic inks and solvents. Furthermore, we use renewable energy during production.
  • Do you comply with global regulations on packaging sustainability? If so, how do you keep up with these regulations
At Alkam we comply with all regulations on packaging sustainability by constantly training ourselves on the latest laws in force.
